Forensic Scientist | DNA Expert | Law Enforcement Leader
Mr. Channell is a seasoned forensic scientist and a respected figure in the field of DNA analysis. With a background in biology and chemistry, he has made significant contributions to the advancement of forensic science and criminal justice. Mr. Channell retired with 34 years as a Forensic Scientist including 17 years as a Laboratory Director.
Education and Early Career:
- Graduated from Elon College (North Carolina) with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry in 1987.
- Joined the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory’s Medical Examiner’s Office, where he began his career as a Forensic Serologist.
DNA Laboratory Establishment:
- In 1995, Mr. Channell took on the challenge of establishing a DNA laboratory.
- Held key positions, including DNA Supervisor/Technical Leader and CODIS State Administrator.
- Contributed to the development of the DNA Database program in Arkansas, enhancing law enforcement capabilities.
Leadership and Advocacy:
- Promoted to Scientific Operations Director in 2005, overseeing all laboratory divisions.
- Appointed by the Governor as Executive Director in 2007, responsible for strategic direction and management.
- Served on various committees and boards, including:
- Scientific Working Group on DNA Analysis Methods (SWGDAM)
- American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD)
- International Forensic Strategic Alliance (IFSA)
- U.S.-Technical Advisory Group (ISO TC 272 Forensic Science)
- North Carolina Forensic Science Advisory Board
- Central Law Enforcement Leadership Group
- Arkansas Association of Chiefs of Police
Recognition:
- Larry Dunkin Award: Crime Victim’s Reparations Board for Outstanding Advocacy and
- Service to Victims of Crime – 2005
- Received the ASCLD Briggs J. White Award in 2020 for outstanding contributions to forensic science.
Mr. Channell continues to shape the field of forensic science, advocating for excellence,
collaboration, and innovation as a Forensic Advisor to ICITAP.
